Frame a Photograph with an Animated GIF Border using Photoshop

Using Photoshop CS3, CS4 or CS5 you can easily open an animated gif border in frames and add your own photo as long as the border has a transparent center. Newer versions of Photoshop Elements will work too, with a little patience.

Photoshop CS3, CS4 and CS5

1. Download an animated GIF border with a transparent center or use the image above.

Note: Using Copy and Paste in Firefox or Safari will cause transparent areas to become black. Always Save the image to your computer.

2. Open the border in Photoshop.

3. On the top toolbar click Window and check Animation. The animated border should open in frames at the bottom of your workspace.

4. Open your photograph in Photoshop.

5. Using the Move tool Drag it into your frame. Adjust size and position.

Note: If you can't see both your photo and border at the same time in your window, tug the photo down to undock or Select All then Copy. Close the photo and Paste into the border image.

6. Click Window and check Layers to view layers panel. Drag your photo the bottom.

7. In File, click Save for Web & Devices (not Save As). Make sure that you save the image as a GIF.

Note: To view your image as animated you may need to open it in a browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari. You can also copy and paste it into an email or insert into a Powerpoint presentation and view as slide show.
